Investigation Process:
- Initial Challenges: Mukeshwaran had no prior criminal record, making it difficult for the police to track him initially.
- CCTV Footage Analysis: Police reviewed footage from around 150 CCTV cameras along a 10 km stretch from where the victim boarded Mukeshwaran’s scooter to where she was found. This footage covered key areas from the pick-up point to the assault location in Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, VII Sector, HSR Layout.
- Technical Assistance: A team of 40 officers, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Sarah Fathima, worked on this case. They collected mobile phone numbers of individuals present at both key locations during the incident.
- Scooter and Mobile Number Tracking: Although the police did not capture the scooter’s license plate on camera, they identified Mukeshwaran using the color of his scooter and the presence of his mobile phone at the crime scene. They also filtered through 1,000 mobile numbers from the area to find leads.
- Final Identification: The investigation focused on the scooter’s color and CCTV footage, leading to Mukeshwaran’s identification. Despite the absence of clear license plate images, the combination of technical evidence and eyewitness accounts helped the police in their successful apprehension.
