Mangaluru: Two men, Mustaq (32) and Zakir (36), were sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in jail by the Sixth Additional District and Sessions Court on Monday for attempting to murder police personnel in 2015. Judge Kantharaju S V delivered the verdict. Two other accused, Yasin and Ashraf Samosa, are still absconding.
Public prosecutor Choudhari Motilal detailed the incident, which took place on December 17, 2015, in front of Sayyed Madani Darga in Ullal. Head constable Umesh and constable Ravindra responded to a tip-off about miscreants causing a disturbance by pelting bottles. When they questioned the miscreants, the accused threatened them with death. Mustaq attempted to stab Ravindra in the chest, but Umesh intervened. Mustaq and his accomplices then attacked Ravindra with a knife and assaulted Umesh.
A case was registered under sections 504, 506, 353, 332, and 307 read with section 34 of the IPC. The then PSI of Ullal Police Station, Gurappa Kanti, had filed the chargesheet.
The judge sentenced Mustaq and Zakir to 10 years in prison under Section 307, with a fine of ₹5,000. They also received two years under Section 504, seven years under Section 506, two years under Section 353, and two years under Section 332, with additional fines totaling ₹16,000.
The court examined 13 witnesses, 21 documents, and three material objects during the trial, according to prosecutor Choudhari Motilal.
