Bitcoin witnessed sharp price fluctuations at the start of the business week, with its price falling after facing resistance near $84,000 before recovering towards $83,500. The rapid movements across the cryptocurrency market triggered more than $810 million in liquidations of leveraged positions over a 24-hour period, according to data cited from CoinGlass.
The volatility also affected major altcoins, including Ethereum and XRP, as traders faced sudden price changes. The liquidation figures highlight the risks associated with leveraged cryptocurrency trading during periods of significant market movement.
Bitcoin rebounds after falling to an 18-day low
Bitcoin experienced a substantial decline towards the end of the previous business week, when selling pressure pushed its price to an 18-day low of $80,400. The cryptocurrency subsequently recovered over the weekend, rising to around $83,000.
The recovery continued as Bitcoin attempted to move above the $84,000 level, which the report identified as an important resistance point. However, sellers intervened on Monday morning, preventing the cryptocurrency from sustaining its upward momentum.
The renewed selling pressure led to another decline early on Tuesday. Bitcoin reached a low of $80,850 on Bitstamp, marking a higher low compared with its earlier fall to $80,400.
Following that decline, the cryptocurrency staged another recovery. At the time of the report, Bitcoin was trading near $83,500, reflecting significant price movement within a relatively short period.
The repeated swings between local highs and lows demonstrated the market’s heightened volatility during the period covered by the report.
Crypto liquidations cross $810 million
The sharp movements in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies resulted in substantial liquidations across the market.
Data from CoinGlass showed that approximately $810 million worth of long and short positions had been liquidated over the preceding 24 hours. Long positions accounted for around 85% of the total.
Long positions are typically held by traders expecting an asset’s price to rise, while short positions generally reflect expectations of a price decline. When leveraged positions move against traders, exchanges may automatically close them if the required margin is no longer sufficient.
The dominance of long liquidations suggests that traders betting on rising prices bore most of the reported losses during this period.
The figures also illustrate how quickly leveraged trading positions can be wiped out when cryptocurrency prices move sharply in either direction.
More than 173,000 traders affected
The impact extended beyond the total dollar value of liquidated positions. According to the report, 173,611 traders had been affected by liquidations at the time of publication.
The largest individual liquidated position was recorded on Binance and was valued at more than $9.6 million.
Large liquidations can occur when traders use leverage to increase the size of their market exposure. While leverage can amplify potential gains, it can also magnify losses and increase the likelihood of forced position closures during sudden price movements.
The reported liquidation total included both long and short positions, although long positions represented the overwhelming majority of the losses recorded during the period.
Ethereum and XRP also experience price swings
Bitcoin was not the only cryptocurrency affected by the market’s rapid movements. Several major altcoins followed a similar pattern of declines and partial recoveries.
Ethereum fell to around $2,410 before recovering by approximately $100, according to the report. Its movement reflected the broader volatility affecting major digital assets during the same period.
XRP also rebounded after falling to a morning low of $1.31. At the time of publication, it was trading near $1.36.
Despite the recovery, XRP remained more than 3% lower over the preceding 24 hours after failing to move beyond $1.40.
These price movements showed that volatility was not confined to Bitcoin. The report noted that several altcoins mirrored its trajectory, contributing to the broader wave of liquidations across cryptocurrency markets.
Market volatility highlights risks of leveraged trading
Bitcoin’s rejection near $84,000, its subsequent decline and its recovery towards $83,500 unfolded within a short period. Meanwhile, Ethereum and XRP also experienced substantial price changes.
The resulting $810 million in reported liquidations, alongside more than 173,000 affected traders, underscores the potential consequences of leveraged exposure during volatile market conditions.
Although Bitcoin’s rebound offered some recovery after the earlier decline, the price movements described in the report did not establish a sustained direction for the market.
Traders considering leveraged positions face the possibility of rapid losses when prices move against their expectations. The latest figures provide a snapshot of how abrupt market swings can affect positions across the cryptocurrency sector.
