Police have arrested 10 persons, including a minor, in connection with the alleged assault of a 41-year-old woman in Karnataka’s Davanagere district. The accused are also suspected of recording videos and photographs of the incident.
The case was reported under the Basavapatna police station limits in Channagiri taluk.
Woman allegedly offered juice while walking
According to police, the woman had left her home on June 3 after an argument with her husband and was walking towards her brother’s house in a nearby village.
Investigators said a youth approached her on the way and offered her a bottle of juice after noticing that she appeared tired. The woman later told police that she began feeling dizzy shortly after consuming the drink and suspected that it had been mixed with an intoxicating substance.
Police said she was then taken to a secluded location instead of being dropped at her destination.
Complaint filed after videos surfaced
The survivor later reached her brother’s house and informed family members about the incident. The matter came to light after the family reportedly learnt that photographs and videos linked to the incident were being circulated on mobile phones.
Following a complaint, police launched an investigation and arrested 10 suspects. Mobile phones and motorcycles have been seized as part of the probe.
Police assure strict action
The accused, aged between 20 and 30 years, have been booked under relevant provisions of law. Police have also invoked sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Davanagere Superintendent of Police H T Shekhar said the investigation is progressing and assured that appropriate legal action would be taken against all those found involved.
Further investigation is underway.
