Channagiri (Davanagere): CID officials have initiated an investigation into the death of Adil Khalim Ullah, who was brought to the Channagiri police station for questioning regarding allegations of playing matka gambling. The investigation is led by CID DySP Kanakalakshmi, who has visited the police station and reviewed CCTV footage from the incident.
The situation in Channagiri town is currently stable with tight police security in place. In response to the incident, three police officers have been suspended: DySP Prashant G. Munnoli, Police Inspector B. Niranjan, and Crime Branch Sub-Inspector Aaron Akhtar. The suspensions were recommended by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Home Minister G. Parameshwara, and subsequently ordered by East Zone IGP Thiagarajan.
Additionally, three more individuals have been arrested in connection with the siege and damage to the police station, bringing the total number of arrests to 28.
The events leading up to the unrest began last Friday night when Adil Khalim Ullah was detained by Channagiri police for questioning about matka gambling and subsequently died in custody. His relatives have alleged that his death was a result of police misconduct, referring to it as a “lockup death.” The death sparked a violent reaction late on Friday night, with rioters attacking the police station, injuring 11 personnel, and causing significant damage to police vehicles.
