Dharwad‘s agricultural community has reason to celebrate with the onset of the Hindu New Year. Over 6,000 farmers in the district will benefit from the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY), as the central government has sanctioned irrigation projects worth ₹76 crore.

Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil has approved the construction of 50 Surface Minor Irrigation (SMI) projects, including check dams, barrages, and harbours, which will irrigate approximately 2,244 hectares of farmland in Dharwad. Thanks to the efforts of Union Minister and Dharwad MP Pralhad Joshi, the government has allocated ₹45.8 crore towards these projects.

Joshi acknowledged the contributions of Kundgol MLA MR Patil and others who advocated for the approval. He emphasized that since much of Dharwad’s farmland is dependent on rainfall, these projects will help store monsoon water and provide irrigation during dry spells, reducing damage to fields and riverbanks.

Joshi further stated that Minister CR Patil had assured him that these projects would be presented after the budget, and now they are finally reaching the farmers. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and CR Patil for their support, praising MLA MR Patil’s persistent efforts in securing these approvals.

Launched in 2015, PMKSY aims to expand irrigation coverage, improve water efficiency, and promote modern irrigation techniques like drip and sprinkler systems to enhance agricultural productivity.
