A serious allegation has emerged involving the Old Mulla Dhaba, located between Tegur and Kittur near Dharwad, after claims surfaced that a worker, Kiran, was found chained at the establishment. The incident has raised concerns among residents and prompted an investigation by local authorities.

Kiran, reportedly a cook at the dhaba, has been identified as mentally challenged, a condition his father, Arun Kumar, attributes to a road accident that occurred some years ago. According to Arun, the accident left Kiran with a tendency to wander, making it challenging for the family to monitor him. Arun admitted that during a three-day period when he was away, his son may have been chained at the dhaba to prevent him from wandering off and endangering himself. He insisted that the act was done purely as a precaution and not out of ill intent.

The incident came to light following a complaint, prompting swift action from the Garag Police, who visited the dhaba to gather evidence. Dharwad Superintendent of Police (SP) Dr. Gopal Backode also personally visited the establishment to assess the situation. The SP met with Arun Kumar and other involved parties to understand the circumstances leading to the restraint.

The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to determine if the dhaba owner or staff acted negligently or if the measure was taken solely for Kiran’s safety. The case has sparked debate over the ethical considerations of such actions in caring for individuals with mental health challenges.
