Mangaluru: The MangaluruChapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), in collaboration with INTACH Heritage Education and Communication Services, New Delhi, and Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Government Higher Primary School, Gandhinagar, hosted a one-day workshop titled ‘Charakadondige Ondu Dina’ (‘A Day with Charkha’) on January 21, 2025. The initiative aimed to revive the traditional craft of charkha spinning and promote its significance as a sustainable textile practice.

Conducted by Sachidananda KJ and Soumya, advocates for charkha and weaving cultures, the workshop engaged 35 students from classes 7 and 8. The event was presided over by Subhas Chandra Basu, Convener of INTACH Mangaluru Chapter, and Manoj Kumar, President of the School Development Committee.

Sachidananda introduced the charkha as a symbol of self-reliance and mindfulness, explaining its dual role as a traditional craft and a tool for fostering concentration. “Spinning yarn requires focus and care, empowering us to create sustainable textiles while embracing eco-friendly practices,” he said.

Students practiced spinning on portable charkhas under expert guidance. Demonstrations included creating 500-meter yarn and its transformation into fabric.

The event began with a welcome address by headmistress Sharmila D’Souza, followed by an introduction to the resource persons by teacher Rajeshwari. The day concluded with recognition of the students’ enthusiasm and a felicitation ceremony for the facilitators and guests.
