Mangaluru: The third session of the Abbakka @500 Centennial Lecture Series was held on 27 May 2025 at Milagres College, commemorating the legacy of Queen Abbakka, the valiant Tuluva ruler known for her resistance against colonial forces. The event was organised jointly by the Karnataka State College Teachers’ Association (KSCTA) – Mangalore University Chapter and Milagres College, Mangaluru.
Honouring the spirit of Abbakka
The session was inaugurated by Dr. K. C. Mahadesh, Syndicate Member of Mangalore University, who, in his address, emphasised the importance of remembering and emulating Queen Abbakka’s courage and sacrifice. “Her bravery is not just historical—it is aspirational,” he said. “If our students foster a sense of patriotism, they too can embody the same spirit.”
Principal Rev. Fr Dr Michael L. Santhumayor conveyed his appreciation and encouragement for the initiative, noting that such events instil historical awareness and values among youth.
An inspiring lecture on the warrior queen
The keynote lecture was delivered by Vijayalakshmi Kateel, a respected teacher and writer known for her contributions to regional literature and women’s history. Her address focused on Queen Abbakka’s pivotal role in resisting Portuguese colonial forces in the 16th century and her enduring legacy in the coastal region.
Kateel highlighted Abbakka’s unique leadership as a female warrior who united diverse communities, built strategic alliances, and challenged foreign domination at a time when women rulers were a rarity. She also called upon the audience to uphold values of unity, resistance, and national pride in today’s context.
Esteemed presence and warm welcome
The event was graced by Dr. S. B. M. Prasanna, Syndicate Member of Mangalore University, and Sudha N. Vaidya, former president of KSCTA Mangalore Division. Prof. Sowmya Kotian, Head of the Language Department, welcomed the gathering, and Lecturer Mamatha Shetty served as the master of ceremonies.
The Abbakka @500 lecture series is envisioned as a centennial tribute through 100 lectures, aimed at educating and inspiring students and educators alike through historical narratives, cultural exploration, and patriotic reflection.
With each lecture, Milagres College and KSCTA are contributing to the revival of regional heroes and ensuring their contributions are embedded in the educational discourse of Karnataka.
