Chennai: Prakramika Vocational Institute has introduced a set of textbooks aimed at creating a more structured and consistent learning system for neurodivergent children, including those with autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome and intellectual disability. The initiative seeks to ensure that differences in learning needs do not become a barrier to education.
Curriculum focuses on practical learning
The curriculum covers communication skills, mathematics, functional academics, computer skills, activities of daily living, financial literacy and sex education, among other areas.
The institute says its approach is designed to provide measurable and consistent learning outcomes for neurodivergent students. Its existing INVAS framework was developed to provide a uniform curriculum for vocational and skill-based training across different settings.
By combining academic learning with practical skills, the programme aims to help students become more independent and confident in everyday life.
Building a more inclusive education system
Prakramika Vocational Institute was founded in Chennai to support the educational and training needs of neurodivergent children and adults. It also works with teachers, special educators, parents and caregivers to develop strategies for inclusive education and vocational training.
The institute’s resources include books on vocational training, life transitions and inclusive education, reflecting its wider focus on helping neurodivergent individuals participate meaningfully in society.
The new textbooks could also help address a broader challenge faced by families when children move between institutions or cities, where teaching methods and learning expectations may differ.
