In preparation for the 78th Independence Day, the Dharwad district administration, in collaboration with the Department of PU Education, is compiling 77 articles on freedom fighters and historical sites. A lecture series running from August 1 to 13 features history lecturers discussing notable figures and places at designated pre-university colleges. These lectures will be documented and compiled into a book.
District Commissioner Divya Prabhu, who initiated the project, explained that the goal is to connect today’s generation with local freedom fighters. While national figures are often highlighted on Independence Day, this project focuses on regional heroes from Dharwad, a key area in the freedom struggle. If the number of documented freedom fighters exceeds 77, the project will continue into future Independence and Republic Days.
Suresh KP, deputy director of the pre-university education department, added that history lecturers are presenting the lives of freedom fighters and historical sites through various formats, including Lavani and gee gee pada folklore, in collaboration with the Kannada and culture department. Lecturers are required to submit their papers in digital format for inclusion in the book.
Additionally, the district administration is hosting seminars with Karnatak University Dharwad and a photo exhibition on heritage in collaboration with the archaeological department. The exhibition will be held from August 5 to 9 at Art Gallery Dharwad and from August 11 to 15 at Glass House in Hubballi. The administration will also display Mahatma Gandhi’s ‘charakha’ (spinning wheel) and plans to organize a heritage walk to historical sites in Hubballi and Dharwad.
