Dr. U. S. Krishna Nayak, AB Shetty Dental College Principal, Passes Away at 63

Mangalore: The dental fraternity is mourning the loss of Dr. U. S. Krishna Nayak, the esteemed principal of A. B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences (ABSMIDS), who passed away at KMC Hospital, Ambedkar Circle at 10:45 PM on Tuesday 3rd December due to complications arising from pneumonia. He was 63.

A Legacy of Excellence in Dentistry and Education

Dr. Nayak was a celebrated orthodontist and academic, widely admired for his contributions to the dental profession. He was also the Director of Nayak’s Dental Specialty Clinic & Orthodontic Centre in Attavar. Born on December 16, 1961, he was the son of pioneering dentist Dr. U. S. Mohandas Nayak and Indira M. Nayak.

Dr. Nayak completed his dental education at KMC College of Dental Surgery, Manipal, graduating in 1982 and earning his post-graduate degree in orthodontics in 1985. Beginning his career as a professor at ABSMIDS, he rose through the ranks, serving as Dean (Academic) before taking on the role of Principal.

Awards and Achievements

Dr. Nayak’s career was decorated with numerous accolades, including:

  • Rajyothsava Award (2003) for his contributions to dentistry in Karnataka.
  • Outstanding Professor Award (2014) by the Indian Orthodontic Society.
  • Recognition as The Most Enterprising Dean of the Year (2019) at the World Dental Conference in Malaysia.
  • Selection as one of the ’20 Most Prominent Principals in Higher Education 2024’ earlier this year.

Dr. Nayak also served as the National President of the Indian Dental Association (2001-2002), reflecting his influence and leadership in the profession.

A Personal and Professional Loss

Dr. Nayak is survived by his wife Shaila, son Dr. Arjun Nayak, daughter Dr. Ektha, and younger brother Dr. U. S. Deepak Nayak.

Funeral Arrangements

The public can pay their respects at his residence, Karishma, near Microwave Station, Hathill, from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM on Wednesday, December 4.

Dr. Nayak’s contributions to orthodontics, dental education, and his students’ lives will be remembered as an enduring legacy. His passing is a profound loss to the dental community and all who knew him.
