Ballari: The probe into the fake degree certificate scam at Vijayanagara Sri Krishnadevaraya University (VSKU) has intensified, with more than 15,000 certificates currently under verification. Preliminary findings reveal that over 1,000 certificates are fake, with fraud estimates reaching Rs 1 crore.

Two outsourced staff members are under scrutiny for allegedly forging official signatures to issue fake convocation certificates. One accused had over Rs 20 lakh transferred to his account, with an additional Rs 10-12 lakh linked to family members. The university has submitted its findings to the Chief Minister’s office and the higher education minister.

The scam was uncovered when a student from Kanakagiri, Koppal district, questioned the authenticity of a certificate after realizing no official receipt was provided for the fee paid. Reports indicate that students were charged Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 per certificate.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. M. Muniraju confirmed that all 24,000 convocation certificates issued since 2022 are being reviewed. A formal police complaint is expected soon, and legal action will be taken against those involved.
