The Kerala Directorate of Higher Secondary Education has implemented a ban on sharing study materials through social media platforms like WhatsApp.
This decision aims to ensure that learning remains centered within classrooms and is not diluted by external digital resources. The order specifically prohibits both the digital sharing of study notes and the subsequent printing of those materials. Regional deputy directors are now responsible for conducting regular inspections to ensure compliance with these new rules, as confirmed by Higher Secondary Academic Joint Director Suresh Kumar.
The move follows a period during the COVID-19 pandemic when digital learning became prevalent due to school closures. While online classes provided benefits, concerns from parents, culminating in a formal complaint to the Child Rights Commission, prompted the Directorate to reconsider this practice. As a result, school principals are now directed to prevent teachers from distributing notes via digital platforms and encourage traditional methods of learning.
Key Benefits of Handwritten Notes:
- Deeper Engagement: Handwriting requires active engagement with material, promoting critical thinking and understanding.
- Improved Memory: The multi-sensory experience of writing solidifies information in memory and enhances recall.
- Enhanced Creativity: Handwriting allows for creative freedom in organizing and connecting ideas.
- Improved Focus: Writing by hand reduces distractions from digital devices, leading to better concentration.
- Personal Touch: Handwritten notes can include personal elements like diagrams or highlights, making them more meaningful.
- Better Organization: Flexibility in organizing information in a preferred format tailored to individual learning styles.
- Reduced Risk of Burnout: Handwriting offers a break from screen time, helping alleviate eye strain and fatigue.
As technology increasingly dominates education, the Kerala government’s decision highlights the lasting benefits of traditional learning methods. Handwritten notes, despite seeming outdated, continue to play a vital role in improving understanding and memory retention in the classroom.
