At a joint symposium held at Kalaangan, Mangalore, the Global Konknni Forum (GKF) and Mandd Shoban strongly opposed the Sahitya Akademi’s recognition of only the Devanagiri script for Konkani. The organizations passed a resolution demanding equal rights for the Romi and Kannada scripts, calling the current policy discriminatory.
The symposium’s resolution also included plans for legal action, with both groups vowing to take their case to the Supreme Court to push for the inclusion of other Konkani scripts in Sahitya Awards. They formed a new action committee led by GKF president Kennedy Afonso to spearhead the movement.
Eric Ozario and other members of Mandd Shoban criticized the Sahitya Akademi’s decision as an attempt to impose Devanagiri at the expense of Konkani’s rich linguistic diversity. They emphasized the need to protect the variety of Konkani dialects, traditions, and scripts.
