Koppal: Yelburga Congress MLA Basavaraj Rayareddy and BJP state executive member Dr. Basavaraj Kyavatar have urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to retain Koppal University, emphasizing its significance for the district’s progress.

In his letter, Rayareddy stressed the need for the university, citing Koppal’s limited higher education opportunities. He criticized the BJP government for establishing 10 universities without proper planning. He highlighted that due to restrictions on land acquisition, construction, and infrastructure, only ₹2 crore was allocated, and apart from vice-chancellors, no other posts were sanctioned.

Koppal, one of the state’s most underdeveloped districts, has low literacy and minimal graduate representation. Rayareddy insisted that retaining the university with adequate facilities was crucial for educational upliftment.

Dr. Kyavatar echoed these concerns, condemning the decision to shut down universities as a setback for regional development. He accused the state government of failing to provide resources for projects, prioritizing guarantees over education, and now shutting institutions vital for students.

Warning of potential protests, he stated that the BJP would launch district-wide agitations if the government did not officially announce the continuation of Koppal University.
