The second round of the II Pre-University (PU) exams commenced on Thursday across Karnataka, but turnout was lower than expected. Of the 50,088 students registered for the Kannada/Arabic paper, only 39,842 attended—just under 80%.
According to the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB), Bengaluru North saw the highest participation at 91%, followed by Bengaluru South with 87%. In contrast, Shivamogga recorded the lowest turnout, with just 69.1% attendance.
A PU college principal explained the reasons behind the absence: “Since registration was free, many signed up. But students had only about 20 days to prepare after the results were announced on April 8. That’s barely enough time to study and make a significant improvement.”
The principal added that the low turnout was also due to the fact that students have another opportunity. “There’s one more attempt. Those who aren’t confident now can try later. So, there’s less pressure,” he noted.
