New Delhi: The National Council of Educational Research and Training has introduced new textbooks for Classes 1 to 8 in both print and digital formats as part of ongoing education reforms.
The updated books are aligned with the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023, aiming to make learning more engaging and future-ready.
Focus on updated curriculum
NCERT said the revised textbooks have been developed in line with recommendations of the NCF-SE 2023, focusing on competency-based and learner-centric education.
The initiative is designed to:
- Improve conceptual understanding
- Make content more relevant
- Encourage critical thinking among students
Class 9 textbooks in development
Textbooks for Class 9 are currently under preparation and will be introduced in the 2026–27 academic session.
Draft syllabi for Class 9 have already been uploaded on NCERT’s official website, inviting feedback from educators and stakeholders.
Transition plan for higher classes
NCERT has outlined a phased rollout for other classes:
- Classes 10 and 11: New textbooks to be introduced in 2027–28
- Academic year 2026–27: Existing textbooks will continue for these classes
Advisory for teachers
The council has advised teachers to ensure that students have the necessary foundational knowledge before transitioning to the new syllabus.
This step is crucial to help students adapt smoothly to the revised curriculum without learning gaps.
Aim of the reform
NCERT described the textbook revision as a significant step towards modernising school education in India. The focus is on creating a system that prioritises understanding over rote learning.
Conclusion
With new textbooks already rolled out for Classes 1–8 and further updates planned, NCERT’s reforms mark a major shift towards a more flexible, competency-driven education system aligned with national policy goals.
