Nagpur: The death of a NEET aspirant by suicide in Maharashtra’s Nagpur has intensified the political controversy surrounding examination irregularities, paper leaks and re-examination concerns, with several Opposition leaders launching sharp attacks on the Centre over the incident.
The student, originally from Mauganj district in Madhya Pradesh, was preparing for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) in Nagpur, where her father works as a cook. According to reports, the family discovered a handwritten note after returning to their native village following her last rites.
The incident has triggered widespread outrage, with Opposition parties blaming what they describe as a broken examination system for the distress faced by students across the country.
Suicide note highlights anxiety over re-examination
According to family members, the note revealed the student’s concerns about having to potentially reappear for the examination amid the ongoing controversy over alleged paper leaks and examination irregularities.
In the note, she reportedly expressed disappointment and uncertainty about her ability to perform at the same level if required to take the examination again. She also apologised to her parents and spoke about her shattered expectations regarding her NEET results.
The tragedy has reignited concerns about the immense pressure faced by competitive examination aspirants and the psychological impact of uncertainty surrounding major entrance tests.
Rahul Gandhi attacks Centre
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi criticised the Union government, calling the incident a consequence of what he described as a corrupt and dysfunctional education system.
In a post on social media, Gandhi questioned the government’s handling of repeated examination controversies and alleged that adequate reforms had not been implemented despite multiple incidents involving paper leaks and examination irregularities.
He also criticised Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, arguing that accountability for the recurring issues in competitive examinations remains lacking.
Kejriwal targets ‘education mafia’
Arvind Kejriwal also reacted strongly to the incident, calling for decisive action against what he termed an “education mafia” allegedly operating within the country’s examination system.
The former Delhi Chief Minister argued that merely conducting re-examinations cannot address the root causes of recurring paper leak controversies. He said meaningful justice for affected students would require systemic reforms and stricter action against those responsible for compromising examination integrity.
Kejriwal further highlighted the mental stress faced by students amid repeated cancellations and uncertainty surrounding competitive examinations.
TMC joins criticism
The All India Trinamool Congress also expressed condolences to the bereaved family and criticised the Centre over recurring examination-related controversies.
In a statement, the party questioned the government’s ability to safeguard the integrity of national-level examinations and argued that repeated disruptions have undermined students’ confidence in the system.
The party stated that young aspirants invest years of preparation and effort in competitive examinations and deserve a transparent and reliable evaluation process.
