NITK Alumnus Dr Suhas Lalinakere Yathiraj is World No. 1 in Para Badminton

Mangaluru: Dr. Suhas Lalinakere Yathiraj, an esteemed alumnus of the National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal (BTech CSE 2004 Batch), an Arjuna awardee Indian professional Para-Badminton player became the World number one player, displacing French Mazur in the latest Badminton World Federation in World Ranking.

Dr.Suhas is currently serving as an IAS officer in Uttar Pradesh. Since February 2023, he holds the position of Secretary and Director General of Youth Welfare and Prantiya Rakshak Dal, a department of the Government of Uttar Pradesh.

He formerly served as the District Magistrate of Gautam Buddh Nagar. His efficiency and dedication have garnered widespread recognition.

Beyond his administrative role, Suhas is a paralympic athlete who proudly represents our nation on the international stage.

Dr. Suhas has been awarded honorary Doctorate from NITK Surathkal. He was also honoured as Distinguished Alumnus in 2019, during the Diamond Jubilee Year at NITK.

Here are some of his notable achievements: World No. 1 in Men’s Singles: Suhas is currently ranked world No. 1 in men’s singles in the Para-Badminton category.

Tokyo Paralympics 2021: He won a silver medal in the SL-4 category at the Tokyo Paralympics 2021.

National Champion: Suhas clinched the gold medal in the Men’s Singles category at the second National Para Badminton Championships held in Varanasi in March 2018.

First Indian Bureaucrat to Win International Badminton Championship: At the 2016 Asian Para Badminton Championships in Beijing, China, Suhas became the first Indian bureaucrat to win a professional international badminton championship.

He secured the gold medal by defeating Hary Susanto of Indonesia in the finals while serving as the District Magistrate of Azamgarh.

Yash Bharti Award: In December 2016, Suhas received Uttar Pradesh’s highest civilian honour, the Yash Bharti Award, for his outstanding performances in para sports.

IAS Officer and Paralympic Medallist: Suhas is the only IAS officer in India to win both a Paralympic medal and an Arjuna Award.

Other Awards: He has been recognized for his performances while serving in his official capacity, receiving awards related to elections and revenue administration.
