Mangaluru: The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), Karnataka unit, has urged the state government to eliminate the one-year waiting period imposed on students with backlogs in their final semester exams. The demand was raised during the organisation’s Vidyarthi Nyaya Yatra, a statewide initiative aimed at understanding the academic and non-academic challenges faced by students.

State secretary Anvith Kateel, addressing reporters on Wednesday, stressed that students facing final-semester backlogs should be allowed to take supplementary exams immediately after results are declared. “The current system forces them to wait a full academic year. Many drop out entirely due to this delay, leaving courses incomplete,” he said. “This is impractical. The state must facilitate timely makeup exams so students can continue their studies or seek employment.”

The Vidyarthi Nyaya Yatra, which began on March 17, has already covered nine districts and has now reached Dakshina Kannada. It engages with students from engineering, medical, graduate, agriculture, and other educational streams.

Other key demands raised during the yatra include:

  • Career guidance to help students select appropriate courses or careers.

  • Improved facilities in government-run hostels.

  • Stronger efforts to curb drug abuse among youth.

  • Implementation of menstrual leave for students.

  • Crackdown on fake job consultancies operating in the state.

  • “We will compile all these issues and submit a detailed report to the state government soon,” Kateel said, adding that the campaign has received overwhelming support from students across Karnataka.
