Puttur: The fifth season of the St Philomena Premier League (SPL) was inaugurated with fervour and festivity at the St Philomena College (Autonomous) cricket grounds, signalling the start of one of the most anticipated campus sporting events of the year.

Organised by the Department of Physical Education, the event began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by Mr Mamachan M., President of the Karnataka State Physical Education Teachers’ Association, who declared the tournament open. He lauded the college’s sporting legacy and said, “Let the aspirations of budding athletes be fulfilled on this ground,” while also appreciating the achievements of Chris Angelo, son of the college’s Physical Education Director, who recently scored a century at the Under-16 zonal level tournament.

Celebrating sports, legacy and spirit

Dr Norbert Mascarenhas, Registrar (Academics), addressed the symbolic significance of the sports ground, calling it “sanctified by the sweat, toil, and dreams” of past athletes. He paid homage to silent contributors like Major Venkataramayya, former directors of physical education, and various benefactors who helped build the college’s athletic legacy. “Let us accept both victory and defeat with equanimity,” he urged participants.

Presiding over the function, Vice Principal Dr Vijayakumar Moleyar reflected on the SPL’s journey. “Thousands have played here, but few have reached global heights. We must emulate legends like Sachin Tendulkar by embracing humility, discipline, and perseverance,” he said. Encouraging camaraderie, he added, “Let sports create unity, not enmity. Shake hands after the match.”
