Santa Fe: A fire that destroyed several historic buildings at St Catherine Indian School in Santa Fe has been determined to be human-caused, while a suspected case against 35-year-old Anthony Dault has yet to result in criminal charges.

The blaze broke out on July 2, engulfing several buildings at the long-shuttered Catholic boarding school. State fire investigators concluded that the fire was caused by human activity, according to reports provided by Santa Fe police.

Police investigation points to suspect

Santa Fe police detectives believe Dault was responsible for starting the fire. Officers reportedly found him unclothed near the school grounds after firefighters arrived at the scene.

Investigators have gathered witness statements and video footage that they believe place Dault near the St Catherine campus earlier on the day of the fire. Police also say footage showed him in downtown Santa Fe that morning carrying a torch gun.

The evidence has formed the basis of the police investigation into the historic property’s destruction.

Prosecutors seek more evidence

Despite the police theory, prosecutors have not filed charges. According to police reports, prosecutors have raised concerns about “missing pieces” in the investigation and have indicated that the available evidence is not yet sufficient to move forward with a criminal case.

Police continue to work on strengthening the case and addressing gaps identified during discussions with prosecutors.

The blaze has attracted considerable attention because of the site’s complicated history. Former students and people connected to St Catherine Indian School have spoken about both personal memories and the trauma associated with the former institution.
