Mangaluru: St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru, has achieved a major academic milestone with its undergraduate programmes in Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), and Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EEE) being awarded the prestigious Tier-I Accreditation by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), New Delhi.

The accreditation has been granted under the NBA Tier-I July 2024 Accreditation Document following a comprehensive evaluation conducted by an NBA Expert Team during its visit to the institution from May 8 to 10, 2026. Based on the team’s recommendations and the approval of the competent authority, the three programmes have been accredited for the period July 1, 2025, to December 31, 2028.
First autonomous engineering college in Dakshina Kannada to earn Tier-I status
With this recognition, St Joseph Engineering College has become the first autonomous engineering college in Dakshina Kannada district to secure NBA Tier-I Accreditation. The achievement reflects the institution’s consistent commitment to academic excellence, outcome-based education, innovation, industry relevance and continuous quality improvement.

NBA Tier-I Accreditation is regarded as one of the highest quality benchmarks for technical education in India. It is awarded to autonomous institutions that demonstrate excellence in curriculum design, teaching-learning practices, governance, research, industry engagement, student outcomes and continuous quality enhancement.

The accreditation also enhances the global recognition of graduates from these programmes, particularly in countries that are signatories to the Washington Accord, strengthening their academic and professional opportunities worldwide.
Expert team commends academic excellence
During the evaluation, the NBA Expert Team appreciated SJEC’s robust academic ecosystem, modern infrastructure, dedicated management, qualified faculty, strong industry collaborations, student achievements and effective implementation of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) practices.

The college has been implementing OBE since India became a signatory to the Washington Accord in 2014, ensuring that engineering education aligns with global standards and industry expectations.
The accredited programmes have maintained a strong record of quality over the years. They were first accredited under the OBE framework in 2013 and have successfully retained accreditation through successive cycles. The latest Tier-I recognition further reinforces the institution’s sustained commitment to excellence in engineering education.
Strengthening academic excellence
Established in 2002, St Joseph Engineering College is currently celebrating 25 years of excellence in engineering education. The autonomous institution, affiliated with Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belagavi, has emerged as one of the preferred engineering institutions in coastal Karnataka.

SJEC offers a vibrant academic environment supported by modern infrastructure, experienced faculty, excellent placement opportunities, industry partnerships and active participation in technical, cultural, sports and community engagement activities. The institution continues to focus on nurturing skilled professionals and socially responsible citizens.
The management, principal, faculty, staff, students, alumni, parents and industry partners have expressed pride in this achievement, reaffirming the college’s commitment to extending accreditation excellence across all its academic programmes and further strengthening its quality initiatives in the years ahead.
