Puttur: Bharathi S. Rai, Head of the Department of English and Public Relations Officer at St Philomena College, has been awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) by Srinivas University, Mangaluru, marking a significant academic milestone in her distinguished career.
Dr Bharathi S. Rai earned her doctorate for her research thesis titled “Reinventing Karna: An Exploration of Select Retellings of the Mahabharata.” The research was carried out under the guidance of noted research professor Manjula K. T. of Srinivas University.
Research focusing on epic reinterpretations
Her doctoral work critically examines the evolving literary representations of Karna, one of the most complex and compelling characters of the Mahabharata. Through an in-depth analysis of select retellings, the study explores how contemporary narratives reinterpret Karna’s identity, morality, and social positioning, offering new perspectives on classical mythology within modern literary discourse.
The research contributes meaningfully to the field of English literature by bridging classical epic traditions with contemporary reinterpretative frameworks, highlighting how mythological characters continue to resonate with present-day social and ethical concerns.

During the course of her doctoral research, Dr Bharathi S. Rai published twelve research articles in national and international peer-reviewed journals, underlining the scholarly depth and relevance of her work. An accomplished academic, she holds MA and MPhil degrees in English Literature and is also a law graduate.
