Mumbai: Director Aditya Sarpotdar has said that a sequel to the hit horror-comedy Munjya will only be made if the script meets the creative standards he has set for himself.
Speaking about the possibility of Munjya 2, Sarpotdar emphasised that he would rather not make the sequel than release a film that fails to live up to audience expectations.
The filmmaker’s comments come amid growing demand from fans for a follow-up to Munjya, which emerged as one of the surprise box-office successes of 2024.
Director prioritises quality over timelines
Sarpotdar said he frequently receives messages from viewers asking about a sequel and appreciates the enthusiasm surrounding the film.
However, he stressed that audience expectations make it even more important to ensure that any sequel offers something fresh and compelling.
According to the director, he is willing to wait years before revisiting the franchise if that is what it takes to develop a story that exceeds expectations.
He stated that he would only proceed with Munjya 2 when he feels the script reaches the desired level of quality and originality.
Munjya emerged as surprise blockbuster
Released in 2024, Munjya was based on a lesser-known spirit from Konkan folklore and became a major commercial success despite not featuring a traditional superstar-led cast.
The film reportedly crossed the ₹100-crore mark worldwide and strengthened the growing horror-comedy universe developed by Maddock Films.
The success of the film established Sarpotdar as a key creative force within the shared cinematic universe that also includes Stree, Bhediya and the upcoming Thama.
Focus shifts to Shakti Shalini
While speculation continues around Munjya 2, Sarpotdar said his immediate focus remains on his next project, Shakti Shalini.
The film has completed shooting and is currently in post-production.
Describing the project as a major undertaking, the director said extensive planning and execution were required due to the scale of the production.
He added that ensuring Shakti Shalini reaches its full potential is currently his top priority.
New setting for Maddock’s horror universe
Unlike his previous work, Shakti Shalini explores a new geographical and cultural backdrop within the horror-comedy universe.
The story is set in the Chambal region of Madhya Pradesh, an area the director described as unique and creatively exciting.
Sarpotdar said the opportunity to build a supernatural narrative within a setting he had not previously explored was one of the most appealing aspects of the project.
The film stars Aneet Padda and Vishal Jethwa, both of whom the director praised for their talent and willingness to experiment without fear of failure.
For now, fans eager for Munjya 2 may have to wait, with Sarpotdar making it clear that the sequel will only move forward when he is confident it can surpass expectations and maintain the quality that made the original film a success.
