Los Angeles: Anne Hathaway has revealed that she lived with serious vision impairment for nearly a decade, describing how she was effectively “legally blind” in one eye before undergoing corrective surgery that restored her eyesight.
The Oscar-winning actor, known for films such as The Devil Wears Prada, The Dark Knight Rises and Les Misérables, shared the emotional revelation during a recent podcast conversation, saying the condition developed gradually and went unnoticed for years.
Early-onset cataract caused long-term vision loss
Hathaway said she developed an early-onset cataract in her left eye in her 30s, which progressively worsened over time. The condition left her with significantly reduced vision in one eye, although she initially adapted without fully realising the severity.
She explained that she continued working in major films while unknowingly coping with impaired vision, including during some of her most prominent performances in Hollywood.
The actress eventually underwent corrective eye surgery at around the age of 40, which she described as a transformative experience.
‘It felt like a miracle,’ says Hathaway
After the surgery, Hathaway said she was surprised by the extent of improvement in her vision, describing it as a “miracle-like” experience.
She said she could suddenly perceive colours, depth and details much more clearly, something she had not realised she was missing for years.
The actress admitted that she had adapted to the condition over time, believing her reduced vision was normal until the surgery restored her sight.
Impact on daily life and emotional well-being
Hathaway reflected on how living with poor vision affected her daily life and overall well-being, even if she had subconsciously adjusted to it.
She said the constant strain of the condition likely affected her sense of comfort and calm over the years, something she only recognised after recovery.
Following the procedure, she said she felt physically more relaxed and mentally lighter, noting that the difference was not only visual but also emotional.
Renewed appreciation for sight and health
The actress spoke about how the experience changed her perspective on health and the human senses.
She said regaining clear vision gave her a deeper appreciation for modern medical advancements and the importance of timely treatment.
Hathaway also reflected on the emotional value of sensory experiences, mentioning moments such as motherhood and the strong connection created through smell, touch and sight.
She added that clarity of vision has given her a renewed sense of gratitude in everyday life.
Career continues with major projects
Anne Hathaway continues to remain active in Hollywood and is reportedly set to reprise her role in The Devil Wears Prada 2 alongside Meryl Streep.
Her recent comments have drawn widespread attention from fans, many of whom expressed surprise that she continued working at the highest level while dealing with such a condition privately.
The revelation has also sparked conversations online about undiagnosed vision problems and the importance of regular eye check-ups.
