In a significant development in the Malayalam film industry’s ongoing #MeToo reckoning, Kerala Police are preparing to arrest actor Siddique after the Kerala High Court denied his anticipatory bail in a rape case filed by a former actress. According to sources, a lookout circular has been issued, and the police are intensifying efforts to track down Siddique, who is accused of sexually assaulting the complainant at a state-owned hotel in Thiruvananthapuram in 2016.

Allegations Against Siddique

The charges against Siddique stem from a complaint filed by a former actress who alleges that the actor raped her in 2016 after coercing her into providing sexual favours in exchange for a role in a Tamil movie. The actress claims that when she refused his advances, Siddique allegedly assaulted her. The complaint was lodged recently following the release of the Hema Committee report, which shed light on widespread abuse and harassment of women in the Malayalam film industry. The report has inspired several former actresses to come forward with their stories of exploitation, leading to multiple legal actions.

The Hema Committee Report’s Impact

The Hema Committee report, commissioned to investigate the treatment of women in the Malayalam film industry, has had a profound impact since its release. It highlighted systemic issues of abuse, prompting many women to speak out about their experiences of sexual misconduct. Following the report, 11 FIRs have been registered against actors, directors, and producers accused of various forms of misconduct. Siddique’s case is the latest in this series of high-profile allegations, marking a turning point in the industry’s #MeToo movement.

Siddique’s Response

Siddique, who recently resigned as the general secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA), has categorically denied the allegations against him. In his defence, Siddique claims that the complainant has been harassing him since 2019 by making baseless accusations on social media. He pointed out that the actress had previously accused him of misbehaving with her at a theatre in 2016 but escalated her claims to rape only after the Hema Committee report’s publication.

Following the surfacing of these allegations, Siddique resigned from his AMMA post, a move that led the entire committee, chaired by prominent actor Mohanlal, to step down as well. The resignation has sparked widespread criticism and debate within the industry, with many calling for more accountability and transparency in handling such allegations.

Widening Scandal in the Malayalam Film Industry

The ripple effects of the Hema Committee report continue to unfold, exposing the darker side of the Malayalam film industry. The report’s revelations have prompted the police to register FIRs against well-known figures, further shaking the industry. Apart from Siddique, other prominent personalities implicated in similar cases include actor-turned-legislator Mukesh Madhavan, and actors Nivin Pauly, Jayasurya, Edavela Babu, and Maniyanpilla Raju, as well as directors Ranjith and Prakash.

Looking Ahead

As the investigation into Siddique’s case progresses, the outcome will be closely watched, not just by those within the industry but also by the public who have been following the #MeToo movement in Malayalam cinema. The developments signify a critical juncture where the industry must reckon with its past and take decisive steps towards creating a safer environment for women.

With more survivors coming forward and legal proceedings gaining momentum, the Malayalam film industry faces an urgent need for reform and a comprehensive overhaul of its handling of sexual misconduct allegations.
