Mumbai: After a year marked by uneven box office performances and cautious audience turnout, the Hindi film industry is looking towards 2026 with renewed optimism, banking on a slate of big-budget, star-driven releases to bring audiences back to cinemas and restore momentum to theatrical business.
Mixed year prompts fresh expectations
The past year delivered a mixed bag for Bollywood, with a handful of major successes offset by several underperforming films. While some big releases struggled to justify their budgets, a few standout titles managed to draw crowds, reminding the industry of cinema’s enduring appeal when content, scale and star power align.
Trade experts say the lessons of the last year have made producers more cautious but also more strategic, leading to a carefully curated lineup for 2026. With several high-profile films featuring top stars scheduled across the calendar, exhibitors and distributors are hopeful of a sustained revival rather than sporadic hits.
War films dominate the early buzz
One of the most striking trends for 2026 is the dominance of war and patriotic dramas. The year has already begun on a promising note with Sriram Raghavan’s war biopic Ikkis, which has received strong critical appreciation. Although its box office numbers are still awaited, the positive word-of-mouth has encouraged trade circles.
Following closely is Border 2, headlined by Sunny Deol and directed by Anurag Singh. Set against the backdrop of the 1971 India-Pakistan war, the film also stars Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh and Ahaan Shetty. While it draws inspiration from history, industry insiders say the treatment and narrative approach will be distinct from earlier war films, offering audiences a fresh cinematic experience.
Another highly anticipated release is Salman Khan’s Battle of Galwan, inspired by real-life events and centred on one of the most intense recent military standoffs. The film’s trailer has already generated significant online traction, and it is scheduled for release on April 17. Trade analysts believe the combination of patriotism and Salman Khan’s mass appeal could make it a major box office draw.
Dhurandhar phenomenon sets the tone
Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar has emerged as a defining success story, continuing its strong run even in the fourth week of release. The film has crossed Rs 700 crore at the domestic box office and surpassed Rs 1,000 crore globally, placing it among the highest-grossing Hindi films of all time.
Its success has heightened expectations for Dhurandhar 2, which has already been completed and is slated for release on March 20. Distributors believe the sequel could open to record-breaking numbers, riding on the goodwill and fan enthusiasm generated by the first part.
Akshay Rathi, a distributor-exhibitor with theatres across Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, said the industry could witness a blockbuster almost every month in 2026 if audience sentiment remains positive. He added that Dhurandhar 2 has the potential to become the highest-opening Hindi film ever.
Big stars return to the spotlight
Ranbir Kapoor is expected to make a significant comeback to theatres after Animal in 2023 with Ramayana, which is being described as one of the most expensive films ever made in India. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the film boasts a massive scale and an ensemble cast, and is expected to be a major Diwali release.
Kapoor will also be seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love and War, alongside Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal. The film has generated strong interest due to the combination of Bhansali’s grand storytelling style and its leading cast.
Shah Rukh Khan’s return is another major talking point. After a spectacular 2023 with Pathaan, Jawan and Dunki, fans are eagerly awaiting King, which reunites him with Pathaan director Siddharth Anand. Although the release date has not been officially announced, the film is expected to hit theatres in 2026.
Franchises and standalone films to share space
Trade analyst Girish Wankhede believes franchise films will dominate the box office in 2026, supported by select standalone projects. He pointed out that in 2025 alone, 31 films across languages crossed the Rs 100 crore mark, and that number is expected to rise further.
According to Wankhede, films like King, Battle of Galwan and Ramayana are poised to deliver big numbers, while the Dhurandhar franchise has already set a benchmark in terms of storytelling and audience engagement.
Strong pipeline across industries
Beyond Hindi cinema, several pan-India releases from the South are also expected to boost overall box office figures. Prabhas’s The Raja Saab and Jana Nayakudu, Vijay’s final theatrical appearance, are scheduled for January 9. March will see releases like Yash’s Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown Ups, Ram Charan and Janhvi Kapoor’s Peddi, and Jr NTR’s collaboration with director Prashanth Neel.
Ajay Devgn has announced Drishyam 3 for October 2, Akshay Kumar will return with Welcome to the Jungle in December, and Rani Mukerji’s Mardaani 3 is set for a February 27 release. Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 is expected to build on the success of its predecessor with a June release.
Conclusion
With a packed calendar featuring established stars, popular franchises and ambitious new projects, 2026 is shaping up to be a defining year for Indian cinema. Exhibitors and industry leaders believe that if content quality matches scale and expectations, the coming year could mark a sustained revival for theatres and potentially deliver significantly higher box office business than 2025.
