In a recent turn of events, the Bombay High Court has stepped in regarding the release plans of the film ‘Hamare Baarah,’ starring Annu Kapoor. The court has directed the makers to postpone its release until June 14, 2024, amidst a swirl of controversies surrounding the movie, originally slated for June 7.
This decision by the court comes after a series of incidents, including lead actor Annu Kapoor’s meeting with Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde following alleged death threats received via phone calls.
The legal action follows a petition filed by Azhar Tamboli, represented by advocates Mayur Khandeparkar, Aneesa Cheema, and Rekha Musale. The petition raises concerns about the film’s content, alleging a misrepresentation of Islamic sentiments and the Quran. Khandeparkar specifically pointed out objectionable dialogues featured in the film’s trailer and promotional material, questioning its U/A certification suitability.
Advocate Advait Sethna, representing the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), countered these claims by stating that the film underwent scrutiny by a CBFC committee, which recommended edits before certification. However, Sethna acknowledged CBFC’s limited authority, noting its regulation of films but lack of control over trailers and promotional content.
In response to the ongoing debate, the presiding bench deemed further deliberation necessary and adjourned the hearing to June 10, granting both film producers and petitioners the liberty to address any additional concerns.
During a media interaction, Annu Kapoor expressed his thoughts on the film, saying, “Working on ‘Humare Baraah’ has been an incredible journey for me. The film delves into some complex and sensitive topics, and I believe the new title aligns better with our storytelling. I’m excited for audiences to experience the heart and soul of this project on June 7.”
