Two members of K-pop supergroup BTS have faced criticism from fans after attending a Chris Brown concert in Canada, with the appearance triggering a heated debate over celebrity responsibility and support for artists accused or convicted of violence against women.
BTS leader Kim Namjoon and rapper Jung Hoseok were photographed with Brown, who shared the picture on social media on Thursday. The image quickly drew reactions from sections of the BTS fan community.
Fans question BTS members’ decision
Brown has faced multiple allegations and legal cases involving violence and sexual misconduct over the years. He was convicted of assaulting Rihanna in 2009 and has subsequently faced other allegations, several of which were either dropped or settled.
Following the concert appearance, some BTS fans said they were uncomfortable seeing members of a group with a large female following associated with Brown.
One fan, identifying as an ARMY and a survivor of sexual assault, said she did not appreciate artists she admired appearing to support someone with a history of violence against women.
Debate over celebrity responsibility
The controversy has also divided BTS fans online. While some defended the singers by arguing that celebrities are entitled to attend concerts like anyone else, others said public figures have a greater responsibility because their actions can influence millions of followers.
Some users also warned fans against defending celebrities without considering how such discussions might affect people who have experienced domestic violence or abuse.
The debate has raised wider questions about whether attending a concert should be viewed simply as a personal choice or as a form of public support, particularly when the artist involved has a controversial history.
Controversy adds to recent BTS criticism
The latest backlash comes shortly after BTS faced criticism over a collaboration with Google’s Gemini AI. The advertisement, created to highlight the possibilities of technology and art, was displayed at the Las Vegas Sphere but drew criticism from some fans over concerns about the environmental impact of artificial intelligence.
The latest controversy has therefore added another point of discussion among BTS fans, as the group continues to navigate intense public attention surrounding its work and public appearances.
