Emmy-winning actress Catherine O’Hara, celebrated for her unforgettable screen mothers and sharp comic timing, once said that the role she cherished most was not written into any script — it was being a mother. O’Hara passed away on Friday, January 30, after a brief illness. She was 71.

Known globally for her performances in films such as Home Alone and the acclaimed television series Schitt’s Creek, O’Hara repeatedly expressed that her proudest achievement was raising her two sons, Matthew and Luke, with her husband, Bo Welch.

‘Mother of my children’

In a resurfaced interview from February 2024, O’Hara was asked which role she wanted to be remembered for. Her response was immediate and unambiguous: “The mother of my children.” When the interviewer clarified that he meant her acting work, she laughed and gestured toward her husband, quipping, “His wife.”

O’Hara largely kept her family life away from the spotlight and made deliberate career choices to remain present during her children’s formative years. Speaking on Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Wiser Than Me podcast in October 2024, she revealed that she turned down opportunities that would keep her away from home for extended periods. “My family’s always come first,” she said.

Choosing presence over prestige

The actor explained that while she did accept work occasionally, she preferred projects close to home and short commitments. “What’s the point of having children if I’m not going to be with them?” she once reflected.

As her sons grew older, they naturally gravitated towards the film industry, working behind the scenes on Schitt’s Creek and other major productions. O’Hara spoke proudly of their humour, saying laughter was central to their home.

A legacy beyond the screen

While Catherine O’Hara will be remembered for her iconic characters, colleagues and fans alike say her words about motherhood reveal the heart behind the performances — a woman who measured success not by awards, but by love, presence and family.
