Filmmaker and choreographer Farah Khan has candidly spoken about her difficult childhood, firmly rejecting the “nepo kid” label and recalling how her family went from wealth to extreme financial hardship after her father’s film failed.

From success to sudden downfall

Farah revealed that her father, filmmaker Kamran Khan, faced a devastating financial collapse after his film Aisa Bhi Hota Hai failed at the box office. The loss wiped out the family’s savings, forcing them into poverty almost overnight.

“We became paupers,” she said, adding that her father passed away with just ₹30 in his pocket. She described the transition as “riches to rags,” explaining that her father had mortgaged everything to finance the film.

A childhood marked by instability

The aftermath of the failure deeply affected family life. Farah recalled living in fear during her childhood, especially when her father struggled with alcoholism. “As the sun went down, we used to start shaking,” she said, describing the uncertainty at home.

Her parents’ separation added to the emotional strain, but societal norms at the time made it difficult to openly discuss such issues.

Farah also spoke about feeling overlooked after the birth of her brother, Sajid Khan, as attention shifted within the family. This experience, she said, shaped her determination to succeed and assert herself.

Financial struggles forced her to take on responsibilities early. She shared that one of her first purchases was a refrigerator worth ₹4,000, reflecting the modest beginnings she worked through.
