Veteran Bollywood actor Govinda has issued a public apology following controversial remarks made by his wife Sunita Ahuja about their long-time family priest, Pandit Mukesh Shukla.
In a video statement released on November 4, Govinda expressed regret over his wife’s comments, calling them “disparaging” and reiterating his deep respect for the Shukla family, who have served as his spiritual advisors for many years.
Govinda issues public apology
Govinda said, “I have been consulting Pandit Mukesh Shukla for years and I respect him immensely. His father has also been our family’s pandit for years. My wife made disparaging remarks against Pandit Mukesh Shukla on the podcast, and I condemn them. My deepest apologies.”
He further acknowledged the long-standing bond between his family and the Shuklas, adding, “Pandit Mukesh ji and his family have been with me in tough times, and I respect him a lot.”
The actor’s apology video quickly went viral, drawing appreciation from fans and followers who praised his humility and sense of responsibility.
Sunita Ahuja’s controversial comments
The controversy began when Sunita Ahuja appeared on actor Paras Chhabra’s podcast, where she spoke candidly about Govinda’s practice of consulting priests and astrologers. During the chat, Paras remarked that not all pandits have good intentions, to which Sunita replied, “We also have one in our house, Govinda’s pandit. He is also like this only — gets pujas done, charges ₹2 lakh.”
Sunita went on to say, “I tell him that you should pray on your own, unka karaaya hua puja paath kuch kaam nahi aane wala hai (the rituals they perform won’t help you). God will accept the prayers that you do on your own. Even if I donate or do any good deed, I do it with my own hands for my karma.”
Criticism of Govinda’s circle
In the same podcast, Sunita also criticised some members of Govinda’s inner circle, saying, “The circle that he sits in has foolish writers who are less writers and more fools. They make him a fool and give terrible advice. He doesn’t get good people, and they don’t like me because I speak the truth.”
Her remarks triggered backlash on social media, with several users calling her comments disrespectful. Many urged Govinda to clarify his stance, leading to his public apology.
Govinda and Sunita’s long marriage
Govinda and Sunita Ahuja, who married in 1987, have been one of Bollywood’s most talked-about couples. They share two children — son Yashvardhan and daughter Tina Ahuja.
Despite frequent rumours of strain in their relationship, the couple has consistently denied reports of separation, maintaining that their bond remains strong. Govinda, known for his cheerful persona and honesty, has often credited his wife for supporting him through his highs and lows in the film industry.
A gesture of reconciliation
Govinda’s apology appears to be a step toward restoring harmony and mutual respect between the families involved. His statement also underlines his commitment to maintaining dignity in public life and respecting long-standing personal associations.
Fans have lauded his response as an example of maturity and humility, saying it reflects the actor’s belief in peace and positivity — traits that have long defined his public image.
