Hyderabad: Filmmaker Prasanth Varma, who rose to nationwide fame with his blockbuster Hanu-Man, has found himself in the middle of a financial dispute with the film’s producer K. Niranjan Reddy of PrimeShow Entertainment. The matter has now reached the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce and the Telugu Film Directors’ Association for resolution.

Producer alleges non-completion of projects

According to industry reports, PrimeShow Entertainment has alleged that advance payments were made to Prasanth Varma for several proposed projects — including Adhira, Mahakali, Jai Hanuman, and Brahma Rakshasa.

However, the producer claims that none of these projects progressed under his banner as initially planned. Niranjan Reddy reportedly approached the Film Chamber seeking the return of the advances and additional compensation for the alleged non-fulfilment of agreements.

Sources close to the production house said the dispute revolves around financial transactions linked to the period following the success of Hanu-Man, which became one of the highest-grossing Telugu films of early 2024.

Prasanth Varma calls allegations “false and baseless”

Responding to the controversy, Prasanth Varma issued an official statement, expressing disappointment over what he termed as “one-sided and incomplete” reporting by sections of the media.

He said, “Certain media outlets have shared incomplete and one-sided information. It is both irresponsible and misleading.” The director clarified that the issue was already under review by the Film Chamber and urged the public and media to refrain from drawing conclusions until an official decision is made.

“The allegations made against me are false, baseless, and retaliatory in nature,” his note read.

Varma further explained that no formal agreements were signed for the projects mentioned by the producer. He claimed that the payments in question were linked to his profit share from Hanu-Man and not as advance amounts for new films.

Film Chamber to review the dispute

Both sides — the director and the production house — have reportedly submitted their written statements to the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce, which will now examine the contractual details, payment records, and correspondence exchanged between the parties.

Officials from the Chamber said the dispute would be handled in accordance with standard industry procedures to ensure a fair and transparent resolution.

Sources also indicated that representatives from the Telugu Film Directors’ Association may participate in discussions to help mediate between the two parties, given Varma’s prominence as a filmmaker in the industry.

Media urged to verify facts

In his closing remarks, Prasanth Varma appealed to journalists and digital platforms to verify details before publishing speculative reports.

He said, “I request the media and social media platforms to respect the Film Chamber’s process and not to spread misinformation. Let us wait for the official outcome.”

Background: Success and upcoming projects

Prasanth Varma gained immense recognition for creating Hanu-Man, a superhero film set in the fictional Prasanth Varma Cinematic Universe (PVCU). The film was both a critical and commercial success, grossing over ₹300 crore globally.

Following its success, Varma announced Jai Hanuman as the next instalment in his cinematic universe, further increasing public interest. However, the current dispute with PrimeShow Entertainment has cast uncertainty over the immediate production plans for the sequel.

The Film Chamber’s decision, expected in the coming weeks, is likely to determine the next steps for both parties and could influence the timelines of Varma’s upcoming ventures.
