Mumbai: Hanuman Ansh, a low-budget devotional drama based on the life of Neem Karoli Baba, has emerged as one of the biggest box-office surprises of 2026. Made on a reported budget of just Rs 2 crore, the film has delivered returns that have put it ahead of several much bigger Bollywood releases, including Dhurandhar 2, in terms of profitability.
The film, directed by Vishal Chaturvedi and led by Shobhinav Satyaa as Neem Karoli Baba, initially opened to a modest response. However, strong word of mouth and steady audience interest helped the film gain momentum over the following weeks.
By late August, Hanuman Ansh had crossed the Rs 40 crore mark in India, while more recent reports have placed its collection above Rs 50 crore. With its extremely low production cost, the film’s return on investment has become its biggest success story.
From a Rs 2 crore film to a box-office success
Hanuman Ansh had a relatively quiet beginning at the box office. The film reportedly collected only around Rs 10 lakh on its opening day after releasing on August 7.
Instead of declining after its first weekend, however, the film gradually picked up. Audience recommendations and increasing interest in its spiritual subject helped it maintain a presence in theatres well beyond the initial weeks.
According to reports, the film eventually crossed Rs 40 crore in domestic earnings and continued to grow towards the Rs 50 crore mark. This represents a dramatic turnaround from its opening-day performance.
The film’s success is particularly notable because it did not have the conventional advantages associated with big Bollywood releases. It was made without a major star cast and relied heavily on its subject matter and word-of-mouth rather than a large promotional campaign.
Hanuman Ansh vs Dhurandhar 2
The profitability comparison becomes significant when Hanuman Ansh is placed alongside Dhurandhar 2.
While Dhurandhar 2 arrived with a substantially larger production budget and established stars, Hanuman Ansh has generated a much higher percentage return on its investment because of its extremely low cost.
Reports estimate Dhurandhar 2‘s budget at around Rs 125 crore, while Hanuman Ansh was made for approximately Rs 2 crore. Even though the two films operate at vastly different scales, the comparison highlights the difference between total box-office revenue and return on investment.
On a percentage basis, Hanuman Ansh has therefore emerged as a stronger performer. Reports have described its profitability as exceeding 2,000 per cent, although such calculations can vary depending on whether production, distribution, marketing and other costs are included.
Neem Karoli Baba’s story connects with audiences
The film’s subject has been central to its unusual performance.
Hanuman Ansh is based on the life and spiritual journey of Neem Karoli Baba, also known as Maharaj Ji. The story focuses on his teachings, devotion and philosophy of service.
The film arrived at a time when large-scale commercial films were dominating the conversation, yet it found an audience through its spiritual theme.
The film’s lead actor, Shobhinav Satyaa, has also attracted attention for his portrayal of Neem Karoli Baba. According to a recent report, Satyaa was originally working on the production as a second assistant director before stepping into the lead role after the original actor fell ill. He subsequently auditioned for the role and was selected.
Strong word of mouth changes the film’s fortunes
The trajectory of Hanuman Ansh demonstrates how word of mouth can influence a film’s theatrical performance.
Instead of relying on a large opening weekend, the film gradually built an audience. Reports indicate that it received additional shows as demand increased, helping it sustain its theatrical run.
The film’s performance also stands out because it continued to draw audiences several weeks after its release. By Day 25, it had reportedly crossed Rs 50 crore, a significant achievement for a film that started with an opening-day collection of only Rs 10 lakh.
On Day 26, the film continued its strong run and even outperformed Toxic in Tuesday collections, according to reports.
A different kind of Bollywood success
The success of Hanuman Ansh offers a contrasting example to the industry’s dependence on high budgets, established stars and extensive marketing.
Films such as Dhurandhar 2, Toxic and other major releases have operated on much larger budgets and attracted substantial attention even before release. Hanuman Ansh, in contrast, had a relatively low profile when it entered theatres.
Its eventual box-office performance demonstrates that a film does not necessarily need a massive opening to become commercially successful. A strong subject, controlled production costs and sustained audience interest can create a sizeable return over a longer theatrical run.
Profitability gives Hanuman Ansh an edge
The distinction between box-office collection and profitability is important in the case of Hanuman Ansh. A film earning a large gross does not automatically make it the most profitable release, as production, marketing, distribution and other expenses determine the final returns.
With a reported Rs 2 crore production budget and collections that have moved well beyond Rs 50 crore, Hanuman Ansh has created an unusually large gap between investment and theatrical earnings.
The film’s run is therefore being viewed as a case study in how a modestly budgeted project can outperform expectations when it finds a strong audience.
As the film continues its theatrical journey, its final collection could rise further. Regardless of where it eventually finishes, Hanuman Ansh has already established itself as one of the most unexpected commercial success stories of Indian cinema in 2026.
