After dating for over ten years, Colombian sensation Shakira and Barcelona defender Gerard Pique declared their split in 2022. According to a People Magazine article, the 47-year-old singer recently talked candidly about her relationship with the football player and how she “put her career on hold” for him.
“For a long time I put my career on hold, to be next to Gerard, so he could play football,” Shakira told The Sunday Times. The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer said that there was “a lot of sacrifice for love.”
In June 2022, the couple posted a statement on Instagram announcing their split, saying, “We regret to confirm that we are separating.” Because our children’s safety is our top priority, we kindly request privacy at this time. I appreciate your consideration and understanding in advance.” Milan and Sasha, their two sons, are together.
In an interview with Elle Magazine in September 2022, Shakira said, “I’ve remained quiet and just tried to process it all. Um, and yeah, it’s hard to talk about it, especially because I’m still going through it, and because I’m in the public eye and because our separation is not like a regular separation. And so it’s been tough not only for me but also for my kids. Incredibly difficult.”
The former Spanish football player opened up about his divorce from Shakira and how it had affected his kids in 2023. In an interview with El Pais, a Spanish newspaper, he emphasized the reasons behind his public silence following the official announcement of their split in June 2022. It is everyone’s duty to make an effort to act in their children’s best interests. It’s all about keeping them safe. That is every parent’s responsibility who has children. That is my job as a father and that is what I am focused on,” he remarked, as reported by E! News in English.
Mr Pique continued, “I keep doing what I want. The day I die, I will look back and hope I have always done what I wanted. I want to be faithful to myself. I’m not going to spend money cleaning up my image.”
