Chennai: The makers of Jana Nayagan, starring Thalapathy Vijay, have initiated legal action after the full film was allegedly leaked online through illegal channels ahead of its official release. The unexpected leak has come as a major setback for the production team, especially as the film is already facing delays due to pending certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
The film, which has reportedly been made with an investment of several hundred crores, carries significant theatrical, satellite, and OTT value. The unauthorised circulation of its content has raised serious concerns about piracy and its impact on the film industry.
Legal notice issued by production house
Chennai: Advocate Vijayan Subramanian, representing KVN Productions LLP, issued a legal notice addressing the leak and warning of strict action against those involved.
In the statement, the counsel described the incident as a “shock” to the makers and highlighted the urgency of the situation. The notice stated that certain scenes from the film had been illegally accessed, downloaded, copied, and circulated, posing a serious threat of widespread digital piracy across multiple platforms.
The production house emphasised that the film holds “enormous commercial value” and that the leak could severely impact its prospects upon release.
Warning against circulation of leaked content
Chennai: The legal notice also issued a strong warning to the public, stating that downloading, forwarding, sharing, uploading, reposting, or storing any leaked content from the film constitutes a serious criminal offence under copyright laws.
The statement specifically mentioned that sharing such content through platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, Facebook, X, YouTube, or torrent websites would attract individual criminal liability. The makers have urged viewers to refrain from engaging with pirated content in any form.
Legal action underway
Chennai: The production house has confirmed that legal proceedings have already been initiated against individuals responsible for the initial leak. According to the notice, further action is being actively pursued against all those involved in the illegal circulation of the film.
The counsel reiterated that any interaction with leaked material—whether downloading or sharing—could lead to immediate civil and criminal proceedings, signalling a zero-tolerance approach to piracy.
Director appeals for support
Chennai: Director H Vinoth also expressed his disappointment over the incident. In a message shared on social media, he appealed to audiences to support the film by not sharing pirated content.
“Every scene carries someone’s dream. The leak before release is truly painful. Please support by not sharing it,” he stated, highlighting the emotional and creative effort behind the project.
Release delayed amid certification issues
Chennai: Jana Nayagan was initially scheduled for a theatrical release on January 9. However, the film’s release has been postponed due to delays in obtaining certification from the CBFC, with a related case currently pending in court.
Industry insiders suggest that the film may now release after the Tamil Nadu elections, though no official date has been confirmed yet.
Conclusion
Chennai: The leak of Jana Nayagan underscores the persistent challenge of piracy faced by the Indian film industry. With significant investments and high expectations surrounding the film, the makers’ swift legal response aims to curb further damage. As the situation unfolds, audiences are being urged to support the film through legitimate channels and respect the efforts of the creators.
