Irish actor Jessie Buckley created history by winning her first Academy Award for Best Actress for her powerful performance as Agnes Hathaway, the wife of renowned playwright William Shakespeare, in the film Hamnet. The win marks a defining moment in Buckley’s career and has been widely celebrated across the global film industry.
Buckley’s portrayal of a mother coping with unimaginable grief struck a strong emotional chord with audiences and critics alike, making her one of the most talked-about performers of the awards season.
During her heartfelt acceptance speech, Buckley noted that the Oscars ceremony coincided with Mother’s Day in the United Kingdom, making the honour even more meaningful for her personally.
“This is kind of a big deal,” she said, before paying tribute to mothers everywhere. She also shared a tender thought about her eight-month-old daughter, joking that the baby was probably unaware of the moment and was likely “dreaming of milk.”
A powerful story of love, loss and resilience
In Hamnet, Buckley plays Agnes Hathaway opposite actor Paul Mescal as William Shakespeare. The film explores the emotional journey of the couple after the tragic death of their 11-year-old son, believed to have inspired Shakespeare’s later literary work.
Buckley’s sensitive and deeply moving performance brought remarkable depth to the character, capturing the pain, strength and resilience of a mother facing profound loss.
From early struggles to global recognition
Buckley’s journey to Oscar glory began at the age of 17 when she participated in the BBC talent show I’d Do Anything, which aimed to find a new performer for London’s West End stage. Although judges praised her voice, she also faced criticism about her appearance early in her career.
Despite the challenges, Buckley continued to pursue acting and gradually built an impressive portfolio.
Her breakthrough came with the 2018 film Wild Rose, where she played an aspiring country music singer. The role earned her a BAFTA nomination and marked her arrival as a major talent in international cinema.
She later appeared in critically acclaimed projects including Women Talking, The Lost Daughter, the HBO miniseries Chernobyl, and the fourth season of Fargo. Buckley has also enjoyed tremendous success on stage, winning the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance as Sally Bowles in a London revival of Cabaret.
Currently, Buckley is starring as the Bride of Frankenstein in the upcoming film The Bride!, continuing her rise as one of the most versatile performers of her generation.
