Actor Kalki Koechlin has spoken out about the ongoing crisis in the Hindi film industry, bluntly declaring that “Bollywood is in recession.” Appearing on the podcast Aleena Dissects, Kalki highlighted how the industry is plagued by both creative stagnation and financial uncertainty.
“Recession ho raha hai… There’s no content. Whatever they’re making isn’t working—that’s why everything is stalled,” she said.
Kalki emphasized that the industry is well aware of its troubles but feels helpless to fix them. She described a chaotic scenario in which projects are halted, creative teams are repeatedly hired and fired, and no one seems to know what audiences want.
“Kisi ko pata nahi kya chal raha hai… no predictions, no direction… there’s a real crisis but people don’t realise it,” she added.
Koechlin also pointed to the “tripling effect”—how the downfall is affecting everyone across the industry. From big-budget films unable to find release platforms, to smaller actors struggling without work for years, the damage, she said, is widespread and severe.
“Crores have been spent on films that can’t release. And there are actors who haven’t worked in two years,” Kalki observed.
Her comments echo sentiments earlier expressed by her ex-husband, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, who criticized the industry’s lack of creative stimulation and admitted his shift towards South Indian cinema for more meaningful work.
