Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut has opened up about the challenges she encountered while working on her second directorial project, Emergency. In an honest conversation with News18 Showsha, Kangana admitted that she made several missteps, including the decision to direct the film.
Reflecting on the difficulties she faced, Kangana revealed that releasing the movie in theaters was a wrong decision. She explained that she could have secured a better deal on OTT, avoiding the censorship hurdles that now surround the film. “My film will now be dissected. God knows what they’ll keep and what they’ll chop off,” she added, highlighting her frustration with the process.
The film, which centers on former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and the political turmoil during the Emergency era, has stirred controversy. It faced objections from the Shiromani Akali Dal, who feared it could incite communal tensions, and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) initially halted its release due to censorship issues. Originally set for a September 2024 release, the film has now been postponed to January 17, 2025, after meeting certification requirements.
Kangana also shared that the production, which took place during the pandemic and amid challenges like the Assam floods, left her feeling defeated. In hindsight, she confessed that directing a political film was a mistake. “I’m never making a political film again,” she said, vowing to avoid such projects in the future.
Actor Anupam Kher, who stars in the movie, humorously countered her claim, saying, “Never say never!”
