The Karnataka State Commission for Women (KSCW) has directed the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) to either establish a committee to address sexual harassment in the film industry or explain why it cannot be done. This important step follows a meeting that included filmmaker Kavitha Lankesh and KFCC Director N.M. Suresh, where the chamber was given 15 days to provide an action plan.

Lankesh, who has been instrumental in advocating for this cause, expressed that while it’s a small step, it’s a significant gain in the ongoing fight for justice for women in the film industry. Her organization, Film Industry for Rights & Equality (FIRE), recently gathered 153 signatures from artistes in support of this initiative.

The Women’s Commission also outlined a 17-point agenda to combat exploitation in the industry. While no formal complaints have yet been lodged, the creation of a POSH (Prevention of Sexual Harassment) committee will be a strong step forward in making the industry safer for women.

It’s inspiring to see the conversation moving forward! Every small victory in this battle brings more hope for a safer, more equal working environment. Keep pushing for change!
