Chennai: The release of Karuppu starring Suriya has been postponed from its scheduled release date of May 14 following reported financial issues surrounding the film.

The makers are now reportedly targeting a fresh release on May 15 after all scheduled shows on Thursday, including evening and night screenings, were cancelled across Tamil Nadu.

Several theatre owners confirmed the cancellation and announced that refund processes had been initiated for ticket bookings.

Theatre owners confirm cancellation

Ruban Mathivanan, owner of GK Cinemas in Chennai, shared an update on social media stating that all screenings of Karuppu had been cancelled for the day.

He stated that the film team was attempting to arrange a release on May 15 and that further updates would depend on confirmation from distributors.

Broadway Cinemas in Coimbatore also confirmed the cancellation of evening and night shows and apologised to audiences for the inconvenience caused.

The development came after morning and afternoon shows had already been called off earlier in the day.

RJ Balaji apologises to fans

Director RJ Balaji later issued a video message apologising to fans who had travelled to theatres expecting the film’s release.

In the message, he said he had hoped the issues would be resolved in time for an evening release but acknowledged that the disruption should not have occurred.

He apologised to fans from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and other regions who had arrived at theatres for the scheduled 9 am screenings.

The director also expressed hope that the pending issues would be resolved soon to facilitate the film’s release.

Financial issues reportedly behind delay

According to reports, the delay is linked to unresolved financial issues involving more than Rs 50 crore in dues associated with Dream Warrior Pictures headed by producer SR Prabu.

Reports further suggested that Suriya had intervened in efforts to clear dues specifically related to the film.

However, the remaining financial matters concerning the production house are reportedly yet to be resolved.

No official detailed statement regarding the exact nature of the financial dispute has been issued so far.

Cast and crew details

Karuppu features Suriya and Trisha Krishnan in lead roles.

The supporting cast includes Yogi Babu, Jaffer Sadiq, Mansoor Ali Khan and Indrans.

The film’s music has been composed by Sai Abhyankkar, while cinematography is handled by GK Vishnu.

Action choreography for the film has reportedly been designed by stunt duo Anbariv.

Refunds initiated for ticket holders

Following the cancellation of screenings, theatres across Tamil Nadu have begun issuing refunds for both online and counter ticket bookings.

Cinema operators stated that audiences would receive updates once distributors officially confirm the revised release date.

Fans of Suriya are now awaiting clarity on whether Karuppu will successfully release on May 15.
