Chennai: The release of Karuppu, starring Suriya, turned into a festive event on Friday as members of the film’s team surprised fans at a packed screening in the city.
Director RJ Balaji, along with Trisha Krishnan, music composer Sai Abhyankkar and actor Karthi, joined audiences at the popular Rohini Theatre, amplifying the celebratory atmosphere.
The film, which missed its planned Thursday release, finally hit screens on May 15, drawing large crowds across Tamil Nadu.
Fans turn up the energy
Videos circulating online captured the excitement outside and inside the theatre. Fans were seen crowding around RJ Balaji at the entrance, while another clip showed him addressing the audience before the screening.
“Let’s have a great time. We’ve crossed all obstacles. Hope you like the film; the film is all yours now,” he said, drawing loud cheers.
Inside the auditorium, Sai Abhyankkar performed one of the film’s songs live, turning the screening into a mini celebration. The presence of Karthi further elevated the mood, with fans responding with whistles, drums, confetti and fireworks.
A delayed release that tested fans
The festive scenes followed a day of uncertainty. Karuppu was originally scheduled to release on May 14, with fans gathering early for first-day-first-show screenings.
However, the film failed to open due to last-minute financial and production issues, reportedly linked to unsettled dues. Screenings across the state were cancelled, leaving fans waiting through the day.
A day before the release, RJ Balaji shared an emotional apology video, acknowledging the delay and thanking fans for their patience. The issues were resolved overnight, allowing the film to finally release on Friday.
Special moment sparks online buzz
Another highlight that caught attention was a unique title card shown before the film. The makers included a reference to Vijay as “Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay,” sparking conversations on social media.
Many pointed out that Karuppu used the reference even before Jana Nayagan, adding to the buzz around the film’s opening.
