New Delhi: Actress Lara Dutta has credited Akshay Kumar for creating a safe and supportive environment for her and Priyanka Chopra during the filming of their debut movie Andaaz.
In a recent interview, Lara reflected on her early days in Bollywood and highlighted how Akshay Kumar played a crucial role in guiding the two young actors at a time when they were new to the industry and navigating their careers.
A protective presence on set
Lara Dutta revealed that Akshay Kumar was not only a co-star but also a mentor figure who ensured that both she and Priyanka Chopra felt secure and respected on set.
“Just to have that environment where you felt protected and not exploited in any way, and people who looked out for you… Akshay has always been extremely protective,” Lara said.
She added that both she and Priyanka were newcomers with little industry experience, and Akshay recognised their vulnerability.
“He saw two young girls coming in with stars in their eyes and zero guidance and direction. And he never took advantage of that,” she said.
Strong beginnings with Andaaz
The 2003 film Andaaz marked the Bollywood debut of both Lara Dutta and Priyanka Chopra. Directed by Raj Kanwar, the film also featured Akshay Kumar in a leading role.
Lara portrayed Kajal, while Priyanka played Jiya, and Akshay essayed the character of Raj. The film went on to become a significant milestone in their careers, with Lara winning the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.
Although Priyanka Chopra’s film The Hero: Love Story of a Spy released earlier, Andaaz is widely recognised as a major launchpad for both actors in mainstream Bollywood.
Bond that stood the test of time
Lara also spoke about her enduring friendship with Priyanka Chopra, noting that their shared beginnings helped build a strong bond that continues even today.
The two actresses, who both won international beauty pageants in 2000, entered the film industry around the same time and supported each other through the early phases of their careers.
Reflecting on a 20-year journey
In 2024, Andaaz completed 20 years since its release. To mark the occasion, Lara Dutta shared a heartfelt note expressing gratitude towards her co-stars and the film’s team.
She thanked producer Suneel Darshan and director Raj Kanwar for giving her the opportunity, while also appreciating Akshay Kumar for his constant support.
“My forever most handsome, most fun, always there for me Akshay Kumar,” she wrote, recalling the memorable experience of working on the film.
For Priyanka Chopra, Lara added that they would “always have each other’s backs,” highlighting the lasting friendship formed during the project.
Career updates
On the professional front, Lara Dutta was last seen in the series Ranneeti: Balakot and Beyond and is reportedly being considered for a role in Ramayana, directed by Nitesh Tiwari.
Over the years, she has transitioned into diverse roles across films and digital platforms, continuing to remain relevant in the industry.
Conclusion
Lara Dutta’s remarks shed light on the importance of mentorship and a safe working environment in the film industry, especially for newcomers. Her praise for Akshay Kumar underscores the role experienced actors can play in shaping positive experiences for young talent.
As Andaaz continues to be remembered as a significant debut film, such reflections add depth to its legacy and the journeys it helped launch.
