Mysuru: Veteran playback singer S Janaki, whose extraordinary voice defined generations of Indian cinema across multiple languages, passed away at the age of 88 in Mysuru on Saturday after suffering health complications. Widely regarded as one of India’s greatest playback singers, Janaki recorded more than 48,000 songs during a remarkable career spanning over six decades, leaving behind an unparalleled musical legacy.
She was admitted to Apollo Hospital, Mysuru, in the early hours of Saturday after her health deteriorated. Despite intensive medical treatment, she suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away in the evening, according to hospital authorities and family sources.
Veteran singer admitted in critical condition
According to Apollo Hospital, S Janaki was brought to the hospital after developing serious health complications.
Doctors admitted her to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where she remained under constant medical supervision. Despite continuous monitoring and advanced medical care, her condition did not improve.
In an official statement, the hospital said the veteran singer suffered a cardiac arrest and was declared dead shortly afterwards.
Janaki had been residing at Bogadi in Mysuru for the past few years.

The singer’s family confirmed her passing, with her granddaughter Apsara Vydyula sharing an emotional tribute on Instagram.
She wrote that Janaki passed away peacefully while surrounded by her loved ones.
“She left us peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family. While our hearts are heavy, we are also filled with gratitude for the extraordinary life she lived and the immeasurable joy she brought to millions through her timeless music,” Apsara wrote.
She further described her grandmother as a loving, humble and kind person whose warmth would remain with the family forever.
Paying tribute to her immense contribution to Indian music, she added that while the world would remember Janaki as an iconic voice, the family would cherish her as a caring grandmother whose grace touched everyone around her.
