New Delhi: Madalsa Sharma, best known for her role as Kavya in Anupamaa, has opened up about an unsettling experience early in her career when a “renowned filmmaker” allegedly asked her to wear a bikini during a private meeting.
“That is not part of my job”
Speaking on the The Male Feminist Podcast, Madalsa recalled that she was around 19 years old when she was called in for a meeting regarding a potential role.
According to the actress, the filmmaker mentioned that the role required someone comfortable wearing a bikini. While she initially considered it a reasonable requirement depending on the script, the conversation soon took an uncomfortable turn.
“He said he wanted to see whether I could wear a bikini and observe my body language,” she shared.
Madalsa responded firmly, drawing a clear professional boundary. She explained that while she had no issue wearing any costume—be it a bikini, saree, or lehenga—if required for a role and justified within a story, she would only do so in front of the camera as part of her work.
“But to wear it in front of you is not a part of my job,” she said, adding that casting should be based on trust in an actor’s talent rather than such demands.
Standing her ground
Madalsa revealed that she did not hesitate to walk away from the meeting, making it clear that she would not compromise her dignity for a role.
She further shared that a few days later, she came to know about the casting of the same project and learned that the filmmaker and the selected actress were reportedly in a relationship.
While she did not name the filmmaker, her account highlights the challenges many aspiring actors face in the entertainment industry, especially at a young age.
Journey in films and television
Madalsa Sharma began her acting career with the Telugu film Fitting Master in 2009. She went on to feature in several projects, including Shourya, Samrat & Co., and Ram Leela.
However, it was television that brought her widespread recognition. Her portrayal of Kavya in Anupamaa, starring Rupali Ganguly in the lead, turned her into a household name.
Personal life
Madalsa is married to Mahaakshay Chakraborty, son of veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty.
Industry realities
Her revelation adds to the ongoing conversation around professionalism, consent, and boundaries in the entertainment industry. By speaking out, Madalsa Sharma has highlighted the importance of respecting actors’ comfort and maintaining ethical casting practices.
