Chennai: After the underwhelming response to Thug Life, filmmaker Mani Ratnam is reportedly set to helm a new romantic entertainer starring Vijay Sethupathi and Sai Pallavi in the lead roles.
The yet-untitled project, which is expected to go on floors next month, marks a fresh collaboration for the director as he returns to a genre that has long been associated with his filmmaking legacy.
From Dhanush to Vijay Sethupathi
The film was initially pitched to Dhanush, who reportedly appreciated the script and was keen on collaborating with Mani Ratnam. However, discussions are said to have stalled due to disagreements over remuneration, leading to Dhanush stepping away from the project.
Following his exit, several names surfaced as potential replacements. Actor Silambarasan was reportedly approached, and there were also speculations about Dhruv Vikram being considered for the lead role.
Eventually, Vijay Sethupathi was finalised, marking his second collaboration with Mani Ratnam after the 2018 multi-starrer Chekka Chivantha Vaanam. Industry observers see this pairing as an intriguing one, given Sethupathi’s reputation for versatility and his ability to balance commercial and performance-driven roles.
A fresh on-screen pairing
For Sai Pallavi, the project marks her first collaboration with Mani Ratnam and her first time sharing screen space with Vijay Sethupathi. The actor, known for her naturalistic performances and strong screen presence, has carved a niche across Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam cinema.
Earlier reports had suggested that actor Rukmini Vasanth was being considered for the female lead. However, Sai Pallavi has now reportedly been confirmed for the role.
The Vijay Sethupathi–Sai Pallavi pairing is already generating buzz among fans, with many anticipating a refreshing dynamic between the two performers. Both actors are known for choosing unconventional roles, and their collaboration in a romantic entertainer directed by Mani Ratnam has heightened expectations.
Production details
The film will be produced by Lyca Productions, which has previously backed several big-budget Tamil projects. Music for the film will be composed by A. R. Rahman, continuing his long-standing association with Mani Ratnam.
Rahman’s collaborations with the director have historically resulted in memorable soundtracks, adding to the anticipation surrounding the upcoming film.
While plot details remain under wraps, sources describe the project as a romantic entertainer with strong emotional undercurrents — a genre that aligns with Mani Ratnam’s celebrated body of work.
Expectations after Thug Life
Mani Ratnam’s last outing, Thug Life, did not meet audience expectations, leading to mixed responses at the box office. The director, however, continues to command significant respect within the industry for his contributions to Indian cinema over several decades.
With a cast that blends mainstream appeal and acting prowess, and with Rahman on board for music, the new project is seen as an opportunity for Mani Ratnam to reconnect with audiences.
If the film goes on floors as scheduled next month, an official announcement with further details is expected soon. For now, the collaboration between Vijay Sethupathi and Sai Pallavi under Mani Ratnam’s direction has already sparked considerable interest among cinephiles.
