A fresh cinematic journey into J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendary world is underway. Titled The Hunt for Gollum, the newest addition to The Lord of the Rings saga will make its theatrical debut on December 17, 2027, as revealed by Deadline. The film will be directed by Andy Serkis, who will also reprise his iconic role as Gollum.
This upcoming feature reunites the creative masterminds behind the acclaimed LOTR and The Hobbit trilogies. Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens will serve as producers, with Walsh and Boyens also co-authoring the screenplay. Their return marks a significant moment for longtime fans eager for a return to authentic Middle-earth storytelling.
Initially revealed by Warner Bros. Discovery in 2023 with a tentative 2026 release, the project’s development has progressed steadily, with the current release date now confirmed. It’s worth noting that the title The Hunt for Gollum is provisional and may change.
The narrative is expected to focus on the shadowy timeline between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, particularly on the secretive efforts of Aragorn—under Gandalf’s direction—to locate the elusive Gollum.
This film joins a broader resurgence of Tolkien-based content. It follows the 2024 anime epic The War of the Rohirrim, and Amazon’s The Rings of Power, which is entering its third season.
Meanwhile, a second Tolkien film is also under development by the same producing team, though a director has not been confirmed yet.
