San Francisco: Oscar-winning actor Nicole Kidman has revealed that she is training to become a death doula, a non-medical professional who supports individuals and families during the end-of-life process.

Speaking at the University of San Francisco, Kidman shared that the decision stems from a deeply personal place—her experience of losing her mother in 2024.

A personal loss that changed her perspective

Kidman spoke candidly about the emotional challenges her family faced during her mother’s final days.

“As my mother was passing, she was lonely, and there was only so much the family could provide,” she said, highlighting the gap between medical care and emotional presence.

Balancing careers, responsibilities, and caregiving made her realise the need for someone who could offer dedicated, compassionate support.

“I wish there were people who could sit impartially and provide solace and care,” she added.

What is a death doula?

A death doula is a trained, non-medical companion who helps people navigate death and dying with dignity and support.

They typically assist with:

  • Emotional comfort for patients and families
  • Guidance through the dying process
  • Practical help such as planning or legacy work
  • Spiritual or reflective support, depending on needs

Unlike doctors or nurses, their role focuses on presence, empathy, and human connection.

A growing conversation around end-of-life care

The concept of death doulas has been gaining attention globally, including in films like The Pitt, which explore the emotional side of caregiving.

Kidman’s decision reflects a broader shift—more people are beginning to talk openly about death, grief, and how to support loved ones better.

Others in Hollywood exploring the path

Kidman is not alone in this journey. Acclaimed filmmaker Chloé Zhao, known for Hamnet, has also trained as a death doula.

Zhao has spoken about her lifelong fear of death and how understanding it more deeply has helped her approach life differently—suggesting that this path is as much about self-growth as it is about helping others.

What’s next for Kidman

On the professional front, Kidman continues to stay active in cinema. She has recently appeared in projects like Scarpetta and Margo’s Got Money Troubles, and will next be seen in Practical Magic 2 later this year.

A different kind of role

Kidman’s move may seem unusual for a Hollywood star, but it highlights an important truth—some of the most meaningful roles happen off-screen.

Her decision brings attention to the often-overlooked emotional needs of people at the end of life, opening up a conversation that many still find difficult to have.
